How Much Water Should You Store for an Emergency?

The right emergency water reserve depends on people, pets, medical needs, temperature and how much comfort you want to preserve. A useful plan starts with a daily per-person baseline, then tests whether you can actually store and rotate that amount safely.

The first empty bottle feels trivial. The tenth does not. Toilets no longer refill normally. Shops have no bottled stock. Nobody can tell you when pumping will return.

The arithmetic is simple, but the physical reality matters: water is heavy and bulky. Spread storage across manageable containers or sealed retail bottles rather than creating a single reserve that one person cannot move.
Decide whether you are planning for survival or comfort
A household that stores only drinking water can survive a short interruption but may still struggle with food preparation, hand washing and basic sanitation. Moving toward the 10-litre-per-person-per-day planning level gives more flexibility. For four people, that is 120 litres for three days and 280 litres for seven days. You do not have to reach that figure overnight. Build capacity in layers: first drinking water, then a cooking margin, then additional hygiene and utility water where space allows.
Add people and animals who are easy to forget
Pets need drinking water too, and some households need extra clean water for infant formula, wound care or medical equipment. Do not estimate these from memory during an outage. Write the requirement into the plan and keep the relevant preparation instructions with the supply. If someone uses a medical device that depends on water, follow their clinical or supplier guidance rather than substituting a generic preparedness figure. The household total should be calculated from actual needs, not just the number of adults on the electoral roll.
Storage method matters as much as volume
UK Prepare recommends storing bottled water rather than filling your own containers for long-term emergency storage because commercially bottled water is sealed in food-grade packaging. Whatever method you use, keep potable water protected from chemicals, heat, pests and contamination. Check best-before information and rotate supplies into normal household use before they become forgotten stock. Do not store drinking water in containers that previously held fuel, cleaners or other non-food substances.
Build the reserve in stages instead of panic buying
A practical target is to secure three days of drinking water first, then expand toward seven days, then decide whether your household has space and reason to go further. Buying a small amount with normal shopping and rotating it avoids the cost and waste of one huge purchase. Keep an inventory so you know the real number of litres on hand. The goal is not an impressive wall of bottles; it is a maintained reserve that the household can access, carry and trust when the tap stops.
