Emergency Water Purification: What Works, What Does Not, and When To Stop

If your stored drinking water is gone, the safest next step is still to use an official alternative supply whenever one exists. Improvised treatment is a last-resort resilience skill, and the method has to match the hazard rather than relying on one fashionable filter or gadget.
Start with the source, not the treatment gadget
The biggest mistake in emergency purification is assuming every unsafe-water problem is microbiological. Water can also be contaminated by fuels, solvents, pesticides, heavy metals or other chemicals that boiling will not remove and can sometimes concentrate. If your water company issues a do-not-use notice, follow it. If there is visible oil, a chemical smell, an industrial spill nearby or any reason to suspect chemical contamination, do not improvise your way around the warning. Prefer stored or official water before surface water

Boiling and in-date water-purification tablets are recognised emergency disinfection options for microbiological hazards when the water source is otherwise suitable. Follow official instructions rather than guessing contact times, tablet quantities or chemical concentrations. Household bleach can appear in public-health contingency guidance for extreme situations, but using the wrong product or amount creates its own hazard; if that option ever becomes necessary, use the current official instructions exactly. Do not use scented, thickened or splashless products unless the official guidance explicitly says they are suitable.
Do not let one successful treatment create false confidence
Water that has been filtered and disinfected may still be unsuitable if the original hazard was chemical. Domestic jug filters, backpack filters and improvised strainers have different capabilities and should not be treated as universal purifiers. Read the manufacturer specification before an emergency and know what the device does and does not remove. If authorities announce a specific contaminant, follow their advice rather than assuming your equipment covers it.
Protect the treated water from being contaminated again
Use a clean, food-grade container with a lid, label it clearly and keep scoops, dirty hands and untreated water away from the opening. Store treated water cool and protected from chemicals. If you are using emergency treatment because the mains system is compromised, maintain a strict dirty-side / clean-side routine so collection containers do not contaminate drinking containers. Know when the correct action is to stop improvising
Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone who is immunocompromised or medically fragile can be more vulnerable to dehydration or waterborne illness. If safe water cannot be obtained, contact the water company, local authority or emergency services using whatever channels remain available. A dramatic collapse scenario is not a reason to lower the threshold for drinking questionable water. The more uncertain the contamination, the more conservative the decision should be.
