What Still Works in a Power Cut? A Household Systems Reality Check

Blackouts feel total because electricity sits underneath so many services, but different homes fail differently. The useful question is not simply what uses electricity; it is which systems have batteries, gravity, independent fuel, manual operation or backup somewhere in the chain.

Gas may still exist while your boiler does not

A gas supply can remain available during an electricity outage, but most modern boilers need electricity for controls, ignition, pumps and fans. That means a house can have gas in the pipe and still have no central heating or hot water. Gas hobs may behave differently depending on ignition and safety design, so follow manufacturer instructions and never improvise lighting or bypass controls. The practical lesson is to plan warmth separately from the assumption that a gas connection guarantees heat.

Mains water and toilets may work at first, but not everywhere

Many homes continue receiving water during an ordinary local power cut because water networks have their own resilience, storage and backup. However, electricity is used for treatment and pumping, and some apartment buildings depend on local pumps to lift water to upper floors. Toilets may continue flushing while water pressure remains, but private pumps, sewage pumps or macerators can stop immediately. A modest potable-water reserve is therefore sensible even if most short power cuts never affect the tap.

Mobile phones can work while routers die immediately

Your broadband router normally stops the instant mains power fails unless it has backup. A mobile phone may keep service if nearby masts and network backhaul remain powered, but coverage can degrade during longer outages or high demand. Cordless landline handsets usually need mains electricity; some traditional corded services may work depending on the network and installation. Keep 105, emergency numbers and family contacts on paper and have a radio route for information rather than assuming one communication system survives.

Smoke alarms, doorbells and security systems depend on their design

Battery smoke alarms should continue operating if their batteries are healthy. Mains alarms may have backup batteries, but the duration varies. Smart doorbells, cameras and alarms can lose Wi-Fi even when their local battery remains charged. Electric gates, garage doors and access-control systems may have manual releases or backup power. Learn those procedures before an emergency. Do not disable fire or security systems simply because a power cut is inconvenient, and never defeat safety interlocks.

Solar panels do not automatically mean your sockets stay live

A standard grid-connected solar installation commonly shuts down during a grid outage to avoid energising lines that workers may expect to be dead. Keeping household circuits powered normally requires equipment specifically designed for backup or island operation, often with a battery and suitable changeover controls. Portable solar charging is different and can replenish standalone batteries safely when used as designed. Do not try to make a normal solar inverter “backfeed” the house through improvised cables.

Shops, lifts, fuel pumps and payment systems are external dependencies

A supermarket can have food but no functioning tills or refrigeration. A petrol station can have fuel underground but no powered pumps. A lift stops even when the building itself is structurally safe. Cash machines and card terminals may fail locally while other areas continue. That is why preparedness should reduce the need to immediately travel and buy things. The first 72 hours are easier when the household already has basic food, water, light, communications and medication continuity.
