Generator Safety Guide: Avoid Carbon Monoxide, Fire and Electrical Hazards

Portable generators are powerful outage tools because they turn stored fuel into electricity. The same process produces exhaust, heat, noise and electrical hazards. Safe use matters more than maximum output.

On the third night the houses are black except for one kitchen window. A generator hum carries down the street. Inside, the fridge is cold and phones are charging. Outside, everyone knows exactly which household still has fuel.
The machine-apocalypse fiction is frightening. Carbon monoxide and fire are real. Generator safety stays fully free here because surviving the scenario means nothing if the backup plan kills you first.

Carbon monoxide is the non-negotiable risk
Never run a petrol, diesel or other combustion generator indoors, in a garage, basement, shed attached to the home or close to doors, windows and vents. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a colourless gas that can kill without warning. Opening a garage door is not a safety system. Follow the manufacturer’s required outdoor clearance and positioning guidance and keep working carbon-monoxide alarms in the home. If anyone develops headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion or collapse around combustion equipment, move to fresh air and seek emergency help.
Keep the generator dry without enclosing the exhaust
Electricity and rain are a dangerous combination, but the answer is not to move the generator into an enclosed space. Use only weather protection and operating arrangements approved by the manufacturer, with adequate ventilation and safe clearances. Keep plugs and connections away from standing water. Do not operate equipment with damaged leads or cracked sockets. If severe weather makes safe outdoor use impossible, the generator should remain off until it can be operated safely.
Never back-feed a house through a socket
Do not connect a generator to household wiring using improvised male-to-male leads or by plugging it into a normal wall socket. Back-feeding can energise wiring and external lines unexpectedly, putting engineers and neighbours at risk. It can also damage the generator or house electrics. If you want a generator to power fixed circuits, use a competent electrician and correctly designed changeover equipment. Otherwise, power individual approved appliances directly in accordance with generator instructions.
Extension leads and load limits matter
Use leads rated for the required load and environment. Fully unwind cable reels where required to prevent heat build-up. Do not daisy-chain multiple extension leads or overload one outlet. Add the running wattage of connected equipment and account for motor starting surges. Prioritise critical appliances rather than trying to reproduce normal household consumption. If a plug, lead or socket becomes hot, smells burnt, arcs or repeatedly trips protection, stop using it and investigate safely.
Fuel handling creates fire risk
Store fuel only in suitable approved containers and in accordance with local rules and manufacturer guidance, away from ignition sources and living spaces. Switch the generator off and let it cool before refuelling; spilled fuel on hot components can ignite. Rotate stored fuel where appropriate and avoid keeping excessive quantities simply because an outage is imaginable. During a widespread disruption, fuel may be difficult to replace, so ration generator hours around essential loads rather than running it continuously for convenience.
Plan shutdown and recovery
When mains power returns, do not rush. Disconnect loads and shut the generator down using the manufacturer’s procedure. If the generator is part of a professionally installed changeover system, follow that system’s instructions. Inspect equipment before storing it and deal with fuel safely. A generator should be tested and maintained during normal life so an emergency is not the first time anyone reads the manual. The safest generator is the one whose owner already knows exactly where it runs, what it powers and what it cannot safely do.
