Day one: protect life and stop waste
The first 24 hours are about people, hazards, reliable information and preserving resources. Keep refrigeration closed, ration battery use, locate medication and write down contacts. Do not improvise dangerous heating or cooking methods. If power is out, official UK guidance warns that internet, mobile service and even water can be affected. Treat each surviving service as temporary until you know otherwise. The best use of the first day is to reduce the number of surprises waiting for you on day two.
Day two: sanitation and resupply become real
By the second day, rubbish accumulates, hygiene slips and stored water starts feeling finite. Establish a sanitation routine before conditions become unpleasant: separate drinking water from washing water, clean hands before food preparation and protect stored water from contamination. Review food in order of perishability and safety. Check official supply points or local authority information if available, but avoid unnecessary travel into congested areas. Day three: you need a seven-day plan
At 48–72 hours, a serious outage has crossed into a different category. Security without turning into a militia
Fear rises when people believe shortages are permanent. Household security should remain boring: functioning locks, exterior awareness, low visibility, good neighbour relationships and no public display of valuable equipment or supplies. Avoid confrontations over rumours or queues. In real emergencies, cooperation often increases resilience because neighbours can share information, transport, tools and welfare checks. The objective is not to win a fictional war; it is to keep your household safe without creating new danger.
What could make an AI-driven outage different
A normal outage has an expected restoration process and trusted operators. An AI-driven systems crisis could add uncertainty about whether digital control systems, authentication, automated logistics or communications can be trusted. That does not mean machines are physically everywhere. It means restoration may require organisations to isolate networks, revert to manual processes and verify that commands are genuine. For households, the practical consequence is longer uncertainty and a greater need for offline information, paper contacts and manual fallbacks.
At hour 72: stay, move or seek support?
Do not evacuate simply because 72 hours have passed. Move when there is a specific reason: official instruction, unsafe building, no safe water, medical necessity, fire/flood risk or another clear local hazard. If your home remains safe and supplied, staying may avoid traffic, exposure and uncertainty. If it does not, use a pre-planned destination and route.
