The immediate answer

For emergency use, the best power bank is not automatically the biggest. Choose enough usable capacity to support the phones and small devices you actually need, with ports and cables that match them, reliable battery cells, clear charge indicators and a size you will keep maintained. A medium-capacity bank that is charged every few months is more useful than a giant unit that sits flat in a cupboard because nobody remembers it.

Translate capacity into your devices

Manufacturers usually quote power-bank capacity in milliamp-hours at the internal battery voltage, so headline numbers do not translate perfectly into phone charges. Conversion losses, cable losses and device behaviour reduce usable energy. Instead of promising an exact number of charges, test your own phone from a known power-bank state and record the result. That real household measurement is more useful than a marketing claim.

Ports and cables

USB-C Power Delivery is increasingly useful because one port can support many modern phones, tablets and other devices. Check both input and output specifications: a bank that charges devices quickly but takes all day to recharge itself may be frustrating when mains power returns briefly. Battery health and storage

Lithium batteries age. Heat, being left empty for long periods and poor-quality cells can reduce useful capacity. Store power banks in a cool, dry place away from obvious fire risks and inspect for swelling, damage or unusual heat. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Put emergency banks on a maintenance schedule instead of leaving them untouched for years. If a pack is damaged or swollen, stop using it and follow appropriate battery-disposal guidance.

How many banks?

Two independent banks can be more resilient than one very large unit because they can be stored separately, charged at different times and assigned to different people. A household might dedicate one to communications and another to lighting or radio accessories. The right number depends on your devices, expected outage length and ability to recharge. Avoid creating a drawer of cheap untested packs; reliability matters more than count.

What a power bank cannot run

Small USB power banks are not substitutes for whole-home backup power. They will not run electric heating, kettles, standard fridges or most high-power medical equipment. For larger loads, a portable power station, generator or other engineered backup may be required. Air travel and transport limits

If a power bank is part of a travel or evacuation kit, check current airline and transport restrictions before travelling. Lithium battery carriage rules can change and often distinguish between checked and cabin baggage and between energy capacities. Do not assume that a large emergency battery can simply be taken anywhere. For a home-only emergency kit, portability still matters if you might need to evacuate on foot.

The practical buying checklist

Look for reputable safety compliance, enough tested capacity, useful USB-C output, a sensible recharge time, a clear indicator and a warranty from a seller you can identify. Avoid exaggerated capacity claims from unknown products. Once purchased, label the bank with its intended job, store the cable with it and test it on the actual devices it is supposed to support. Emergency power is a system, not a spec-sheet competition.

Assign batteries to people and jobs

A simple labelling system can stop one person exhausting all stored USB power on entertainment. Mark one bank for household communications, another for a vulnerable person or work device, and record when each was last charged. During an outage, estimate remaining battery at set times instead of charging every device automatically. If one phone has excellent battery health and another is failing, make the stronger device the shared information phone. Good battery management stretches modest capacity further than buying an oversized pack and using it without a plan.
