A winter blackout can turn a normal home into a cold structure surprisingly quickly. The danger is not only discomfort: unsafe heating, falls, medication disruption and hypothermia can arrive together.

Close unused rooms, add dry clothing layers and bedding, concentrate activity in a smaller safe area and protect vulnerable household members first. Never bring barbecues, camping stoves or generators indoors for heat. Keep warmth boring and safe

If someone relies on powered medical equipment, use the established backup-power plan and contact the relevant service early if the outage is likely to outlast that backup.

Reduce falls and fire risks in a colder, darker house

Cold muscles, bulky clothing and poor lighting can increase falls. Keep routes to toilets and exits lit with battery lights and free of clutter. Do not place improvised heaters near bedding, curtains or furniture. If using an approved portable heater on backup power, follow its instructions and understand the load it places on the power source.

Know when relocation is safer than persistence

A resilience plan should identify alternative warm locations before an outage. Consider transport needs, pets, medicines and accessibility. If authorities open support centres or issue local advice, use verified information. Staying in a progressively colder home is not a badge of preparedness if a safer option is available.

Build the winter plan before the first severe forecast

Maintain warm layers, bedding, torches, charged power banks, a safe hot-drink plan and a paper list of support contacts. Identify vulnerable neighbours and understand the Priority Services Register if relevant. Winter resilience is mostly preparation completed while the heating still works.
